Continuing my five day series of travel tech tips from, or inspired by, the 2019 edition of 101 iPhone Travel Tips, Tricks, Hacks and Apps, here’s a tip for using Siri for your translation needs.

In iOS 12, you can ask Siri to translate a phrase into many (but not all) foreign languages, and have her speak the result.

Simply activate Siri with a ‘hey Siri’ command, or using your iPhone, and use the following syntax:

Translate [I’m lost] into Chinese

How do I say [can you show me the way to the bus] in German?

What I like about this tip, is you can get translation from the Lock Screen, without navigating to an app like Google Translate. Conveniently, you can also have Siri repeat the phrase, without having to enter it again. It also appears on the screen in the foreign language characters, and, if you make a mistake, its easy to edit what Siri mistakenly heard.
